Niedermayer: The return

Anaheim Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Brian Burke will make an announcement regarding the playing status of Scott Niedermayer tonight at 6:30 p.m. The announcement will take place at Honda Center in the press conference area on the lower service level (same location as Stanley Cup Playoffs).
>> team release
Anaheim's in 11th place in the Western Conference, far from out of the mix, but boy has this team struggled. It turns out losing your highest-scoring forward and defenceman is pretty tough to recover from.

On the Ducks blueline, Sean O'Donnell and Shane Hnidy have really struggled at even strength, and Francois Beauchemin is having a tough time shorthanded. But where having last year's Norris Trophy runner-up is going to help the most is on the power play, where Anaheim's been god awful this season.

The best part if you're a Ducks fan is that the Pacific Division has been wholly mediocre this season, and while Anaheim's on pace for an 82-point season, they're just six points from the division lead.

All that remains to be seen is how long it takes Niedermayer to get up to speed. Only 54 games until the playoffs...

While this is true, one should expect a natural boost in Anaheim's PP numbers because they've stopped using a second unit with Rob Niedermayer and Mark Mowers. These two have played a combined total of 86 power play minutes without recording a point.

Earl,

Mowers peaked with this goal in March 2004, so it doesn't surprise me he's been such a dud on the power play.

What happened to the discussion about cap space for next year if Scott returns? I thought Burke would have to move someone this year in order to put SN back in the lineup since he'd exceed 2008-09 cap [projected as the same as this year].
