Carolina claims Samsonov

The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed forward Sergei Samsonov off re-entry waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Samsonov has appeared in 23 of Chicago's games without scoring a goal. He has four assists, and a minus-seven plus-minus rating.
Well, this is a surprise.

Samsonov's been a no-show in the NHL ever since his turn with the Oilers after the trade deadline in 2006, and this will be the fifth NHL club he's played for in two years.

Carolina's not tight against the cap and has run into some real injury problems up front with Justin Williams and Matt Cullen both ailing, but this is quite a reach. The plus is that he's been claimed on re-entry waivers, meaning the Blackhawks are stuck paying half of his remaining salary.

1) As we wrote on our blog a short time ago, this move and the Leighton signing last week were Desperation moves.
Subtraction by Addition!

If Samsonov couldn't score in Chicago, what makes Carolina thinks he'll start putting them in for them?

Carolina already has issues keeping the puck out of the net. Samsonov does nothing to solve that, and may make it worse.

I have the same questions. How does this move make Carolina better? Rutherford is really rolling the dice with this pick up.

Personally, I would rather see a prospect stay up and get the experience.

I could be wrong, he looked pretty good his first game.

Hopefully he can keep the effort level up.
