The Andre Roy situation

Following is a statement from Tampa Bay Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster regarding left wing Andre Roy, who was sent home following the Lightning’s game at Philadelphia on March 6:

“Today I met with Andre Roy, and also met with John Tortorella and members of his coaching staff, regarding not just the incident that took place between periods and on the bench during the third period in Philadelphia on March 6, but also other situations that have taken place this season involving Andre.

“At this time I have directed Andre to take the week off away from the team, with pay, while our internal discussions and overall review continues. We will not have any further statement or comment to make at this time, and Andre has been asked by the Club not to discuss the matter with the media, until such time as there is a conclusive resolution.”

According to the Tampa paper, Roy was set off by the Flyers repeatedly replaying his losing fight with Riley Cote from earlier in the game . He then went after the Flyer bench during a TV time out, and had to be restrained by a linesman.

Somehow I can picture Bob Clarke watching this going on and laughing from his suite.

Stay classy, Philadelphia.

Philly was being sort of classless, and Roy probably shouldn't have responded the way he did, but John Tortorella is still a dick.

In the linked St. Pete's Times article I liked this quote:

Spokesman Frank Brown said in an e-mail, "League policy prohibits the use of scoreboards for replays that are provocative or present the opposition in an unfavorable light."

Last time I was in Philly for a Leafs-Flyers game I lost count of the number of times they approved text message comments like "Leafs suck" to display in huge letters on the jumbotron.

Watching that exchange was intense. It looked like Roy could not control himself.

Chemmy, I'd argue how inciting "Leafs suck" really is... First off, I don't think they censor much of those text messages (probably just for your standard issue profanities). I doubt they would abandon the feature because it earns them a lot of money. And for the record, Philly isn't the only place that allows it. The Penguins certainly do.

Fans need some thicker skin. I love how this is made to be because of Philly-- have we ignored that a player had no restraint over himself?! Can't see the forest for the trees, can we?
