The goal
Vesa Toskala just let in a flutter puck from the opposition goal line at the other end of the rink, a goal from 185 feet away that's going to make the highlight reels for years to come.
I'll get a YouTube up as soon as it's available; this one has to be seen to be believed.
Islanders stay-at-home defenceman Rob Davison gets his first goal of the season, and only the third of his career, on the penalty kill. It just might also be a record for the longest goal ever scored in an NHL game.

But, but, the Maple Leafs still have a shot at the playoffs..right?
Let the Fire Ron Wilson countdown and San Jose collapse officially begin. Just ask Cloutier about a Lidstrom shot.
Pinder...you are aware Vesa is a Leafer now...right?
Heh, thanks Vesa. At least one Leaf believes we should tank it and get Stamkos.
LOL, oh yeah! I'm guess I'm too eager for the SJ collapse. Oh well, at least if it's against the Leafs, which makes everything alright.
Two ex-sharks...
At least Lidstrom has scored quite a few goals. And he was closer to Cloutier at the time.
Wow.
MSG just said Ray Bourque scored one from behind the red line on Darren Puppa. Ouch.
I blame Ponikarovsky. He got his stick on it -- tough to blame the goalie on a deflection, right?
Poni, either get down and block the shot or get out of the way!
Give the Leafs credit for actually coming back to win the game. That may be the worst goal I've ever seen.

Red line or goal line? Either way, if it was at Boston Garden, it was only as far away as the offside faceoff circle anyways.
Yeah, Ray Bourque did score one from a similar spot, but I can't remember against who. It's on one of the Don Cherry Rock 'Em Sock 'Em videos.
Al MacInnis scored on a wrist shot against Felix Potvin, but that was from around the red line.
At least us Leafs fans can laugh about this. Can you imagine that this freak goal stood between Toskala and a shutout?
He got a tough hop.
E-6 Unearned goal.
Looked at first like the Leafs were serious about getting a shot at Stamkos, but the Islanders proved they want a lottery pick even more.
Thank goodness for the clip, so that we can bring this to the masses. Otherwise only the 70 people who were in the arena at the time would have been lucky enough to see this.
What about Majesky's goal on Sebastien Caron back in 05-06? Very similar (although Majesky shot it from the boards, so the angle was even odder), although maybe not quite as far away. That was the first thing that came to mind though when I saw this highlight.

I remember it being against the Whalers at the Gahden, and Peter Sidorkiewicz was in net, say...1989ish? I got it from the same video as you did.
Confirmed. Not quite as far as Davison's, but otherwise similar. H/T: PPP via Wyshynski
Safe to say the longest unassisted SHG in NHL history?

Good sleuthing! That is indeed the one I was thinking of. It was almost enough to wake up the play-by-play guy.
On Oct.18 1980 in a game between Washington and Chicago the Caps were on the PP. Washington's Paul Mulvey had the puck behind Chicago's net, he tried to pass it to somebody in front , but the puck went past everydody, down the length the rink, and right as it approached the Washington goal over 180 feet away took a weird bounce and skipped past Mike Palmateer and into the net.
