Team Mexico set for world championships

Forward Jose Canseco, who suits up for the National Sports Academy squad in Lake Placid, New York, will attempt to lead the Mexicans to the IIHF Division I level for the first time, at the Division II Pool B Championships in Newcastle, Australia, from April 7-13. The Mexicans will vie for promotion against squads from Australia, China, Iceland, New Zealand, and Spain.

The champion will compete at the Division I level in 2009, while the last-place club will be relegated to Division III. Mexico won promotion into Division II by claiming the Division III World Championship in 2005.

So, that's what Canseco's up to these days.

Any hockey fans in Australia next month should check this one out; my money's on Iceland, for obvious reasons.

UPDATE Come to think of it, I'm going to cover this tournament here once it gets going. Let's see how Canseco and friends do as the underdogs against a powerhouse like Spain:

on its face, i also wouldn't count out China. They have plenty of areas in the north that get lots of ice and snow and i imagine they are putting together a state-sponsored team in their Olympic tradition...
but i also don't know anything about it.

Iceland only needs Gunner Stahl and his triple deke to ensure success...

Newcastle? Damn that's a fair hike from where I live, but it could be cool to see.
I'm not really sure what business any country other than Iceland has in winning that tournament. I mean Australia and Mexico are some of the least icey places I can think of.
Still, let's go Aussies!

I'm rooting for China, I want to see them play Canada next year.
