Crosby: A 40-goal guy?

A coworker here at The Globe sent me an email yesterday, saying he'd bet someone that Sidney Crosby would win the Rocket Richard Trophy within five years.

"Do you think I've just thrown away $20?"

Yes, yes he did.

TSN's Darren Dreger hits the nail on the head today, pointing out that Crosby's style, while terrific, isn't about putting the puck in the net. At least, not with the frequency that Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk and others do.

It makes me wonder though: At what level does Crosby top out in the goal-scoring department? Will he ever be more than a 40-goal guy?

Less the second coming of Gretzky and more the second coming of Adam Oates.

I don't think Crosby will EVER win Richard trophy. He is of Forsberg type, I am too lazy to check, but I think Forsberg's record was 33 something goals. So a safe bet that he'll never score 40 goals. Ton of assists, that's for sure.

he has already had 37... 40 is definitely not out of reach. Rocket is however

The guy's 20 years old, and we already have his career mapped out? Gretzky went from 50 to 90. I'll agree that it doesn't appear likely right now, but surely it's not at all out of the realm of possibility for a guy as talented as Crosby to go from 40 to 60.

Jagr didn't top 40 goals until his fifth full season - then he got 62 and was second in the league.

crosby is peter forsberg so its a sure bet he'll never score 40? that's really poor reasoning

He scored nearly 40 with future Hall of Fame linemates such as Colby Armstrong, Michel Ouellet and Erik Christensen - the Rusty Patenaude, Ron Chipperfield and Dave Lumley of the modern era.
Let's see a full season with Malkin or Hossa before we write him off as the second coming of Bernie Federko.

Watching Sid game in and game out, I've seen him pass up more shots that i care to count. I think he has the talent to score 40 goals, but his game style won't allow him to shoot when he gets the chance. IF he ever changes that, he could easily go from 40- 60.

I don't think the debate is whether Sidney will break 40 or 50, but if he will be the leagues best goal scorer any given season. With his style of play ythe answer is probably not. It is like comparing linemantes like Bossy and Trottier. Bossy was the better goal scorer, but Trottier was the better player.

If Crosby's 212 game career were condensed to a 82 game season, he'd have 38 goals.

So yeah, I'd say he'll probably be a 40-45 goal scorer in the immediate future. But it's hard to imagine him scoring more goals in a season than guys like Ovechkin, Heatley and Kovalchuk (and even Iginla and Malkin), the types of players that are always looking to let it rip.

Outscoring Ovie year after year MIGHT be a stretch, but now that Malkin has emerged as an elite, Crosby can be a 50-goal scorer. Easily. Crosby has been facing #1 pairs every year - teams now have to make a choice.

As has been said, Richard Trophy - probably not, but averaging 40-50 a year - Absolutely.

He's already had seasons of 39 and 36 already and he's not even 21 years of age yet.

Iginla didn't reach 50 until he was 26 years old. Modano was 24. Sakic was 27.

Funny thing is that there haven't been enough regular 50 goal socrers over the past 10-15 years to raise in comparison. I don't really think you can place a ceiling on a player who pots 39 goals and 102 points as an 18 year old in the modern era.
