Flyers @ Capitals: Game 1

I can't recall looking forward to a first-round playoff game this much in a long, long time. What can I say, Washington's captured the imagination of an awful lot of hockey fans.

Japers' Rink and Pension Plan Puppets have game threads for this one.

UPDATE What a goal, what a game. Washington wins, 5-4, and I don't think Philly knows what hit them.

Given Jaroslav Modry was on the ice for all four of the Capitals' even-strength goals, my guess is the game plan changes for Sunday afternoon's Game 2.

Ovechkin will have a national audience for that one, in both countries.

Looks like Thoresen might be out for a bit, I've never heard of an injury like this in the NHL. Hope he's going to be ok, but GO CAPS!

WASHINGTON — Flyers left wing Patrick Thoresen was taken to the hospital for tests after getting hit in the groin by a shot off Alex Ovechkin's stick during Philadelphia's 5-4 loss to Washington on Friday night.

"He's going to the hospital to get an ultrasound done on his testicles. It's bad enough they may have to remove one," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "Right now, we're not sure how serious it is, but there's a chance he may need surgery."

Thoresen blocked Ovechkin's shot with about 6 1/2 minutes left in the game, then dropped to the ice, writhing in pain. Moments later, Washington scored to tie the game 4-4.

"Obviously, I'd have liked to see a whistle," Flyers coach John Stevens said.

Thoresen was helped off the ice and taken to the locker room.

I'm sick of Ovechkin already.

Can someone please tell me why his ridiculous celebrations doesn't constitute as excessive celebration and/or taunting? That should be a two minute penalty.

Flyers handed the game to caps. they just didnt play a 60 min game.

as for Thoresen, feel bad for the guy, he work his ass off for the final 10 games to get the playoff roster spot over kappy and now his career is over.

I don't see how Ovechkin jumping into the boards is any more time consuming or obnoxious than guys doing things like Briere did after his goals, dropping to one knee and pumping his fist

American football? I love it. They actually enforce excessive celebrations and unnecessary taunting with 15 yard penalties.

The NHL needs to wake up and do something up this.

J.R. -- perhaps you'd be better off watching chess matches than any sports. That was the celebration will just be a smile and a handshake.
