Game 7 open thread
Philadelphia @ Washington
Calgary @ San Jose

(3) Washington v. (6) Philadelphia
7 p.m. (TSN)

(2) San Jose v. (7) Calgary
10 p.m. (HNIC)

Two Game 7s, back to back. It doesn't get much better than that for a hockey fan, does it?

The Capitals-Flyers series has been terrific, even with Philadelphia able to clamp down on Ovechkin (up until last night). These are two young teams that finished 14th and 15th in the conference last season and now need just one win to advance to Round 2 for the first time in years.

Washington hasn't won a playoff series in a decade; Philadelphia's last win was prelockout, in 2004 against the Maple Leafs.

The Sharks-Flames series has been what they always call "a war," with big hits and those tried and true "momentum swings." The teams that have already advanced in the West — Detroit, Dallas and Colorado (wait, is it 1998?) — are all hoping a battered team comes out of this one.

If you're lucky enough to have tonight off, grab a bucket of chicken and enjoy. It's not often you get 51/2 hours of hockey goodness like this.

And do note that 62 per cent of readers picked last night's winner correctly.

Not to mention Game 2 of the riveting Suns-Spurs series is also on.

Agreed with chemmy. Go Caps.

God, I hate the Flyers. I thought that, once Bobby Clarke left, that might change, but no, it hasn't. With Mike Knuble injured, the only reason I have to root for them is on the shelf.

I guess I can't get over watching that team up close when I lived in Philly in the 1970s.

Philadelphia has to be hockey's most unpopular team; any time I run a poll like this, they always lose.

You'd think with kids like Mike Richards in there they'd be more popular, but all of the suspensions earlier in the year didn't help change the 'bully' image.

20 years ago, the Capitals came back from down 3 games to 1 for the only time in team history, thanks to a Dale Hunter OT goal . . . versus Philadelphia. Fingers crossed that history repeats tonight and the Caps do it again.

omg Dale Hunter is back???

James - Richards is pretty detestable himself. If he's not diving he's running people. Toss in Danielle Briere's aerial antics, the thuggery, and their owner and I don't think we'll ever see a day when the Flyers aren't at least this hated.

And you didn't even mention Derian Hatcher.

As an aside (I'm fond of these), I don't understand the need to belittle players by feminizing their names. Maybe it's just that I actually like women.

I never got it, but it was driven home when Erik Wendell played for the Gophers. He didn't live up to expectations, and turned into a grinder, though a pretty good one. Fans around here got on him, saying that his sister was a better hockey player. That's true, but you may have heard of Krissy Wendell. No shame in not being that good.

I wonder if the guys from Versus will say the crowd is "50 percent orange" like the boys from NBC did during game two...

Watching the Shark's game 7 makes a fan wonder if the referee's really do get kickbacks and take graft. Obvious penalties in front of the ref's without a call is the worst I have seen in a game 7. Time and again.
Is there a move to ensure there is a Canadian team in the finals?
