A look ahead to Round 2

Eight days in, and we can already look a bit at the second-round matchups.

In the Eastern Conference, anyway. One series is over, two have teams up 3-1 and the other is 2-1. In the West, three series are tied 2-2, and the fourth, Anaheim-Dallas, could be tied up tonight.

Let's assume Montreal advances. They can't play Pittsburgh, given those teams finished 1-2, and will get either the Rangers (assuming they win) or Philadelphia. Washington, in third spot, also cannot face Montreal in the next round.

So, if you subscribe to the notion that a 3-1 lead is bulletproof, Montreal faces the Flyers if they win their series, or the Rangers if Washington advances. Pittsburgh will either face New York or Washington (as long as the Habs move on).

It's still early, but there are some true "dream matchups" on the horizon, at least from a marketing perspective.

Pittsburgh and the Rangers would be great for the hype machine -- Crosby vs New York would sell itself.

Even better would be a Washington win over Philly. That gives you a Penguins/Caps matchup (Crosby vs Ovechkin) paired with Habs/Rangers (original six). Then you're left with a conference final featuring a young superstar vs a big original six market, with all four teams having excellent potential as one half of a Finals matchup.

Even the NHL couldn't screw that up... could they?

Avery vs Crosby/Malkin would be a beauty.

I knoq it's early ... but with the East series (potentially all) ending in 5 games, and the West going at least 6 (with the see-saw battle, could be seven)and certainly harder, higher intensity games, does the Eastern Conference team have an early advantage in the Cup?

I don't want to think too far ahead, but man... old man Roberts would sure set Avery straight, methinks.
