Norris Trophy nominees

Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins, Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings and Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames are the three finalists for the Norris Trophy in 2007-08, awarded "to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position," the National Hockey League announced today.

Members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association submitted ballots for the Norris Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters announced as finalists. The winner will be announced Thursday, June 12 during the 2008 NHL Awards Television Special, which will be broadcast live throughout Canada on CBC and the United States on VERSUS from the historic Elgin Theatre in Toronto.

Decent choices, although I would have taken Sergei Gonchar over Phaneuf.

Here's a look at the nominees.

1) Gonchar gets mostly over looked, but has been one of the most consistently dominating offensive defesnemen the past 8-9 years

Lidström's going to win it, of course, but how many people really think is Phaneuf one of the best three defencemen in the league this season?

Maybe it's cause he's a "monster."

Gonchar is awesome -- and a great guy to boot.

Lidstrom takes this in a walk. It doesn't really matter who the other two nominees are.

I quess it was a bad season for D since Nick The Great missed some games and he's still far ahead of everybody else.

Chara and Phaneuf are mistake prone but still very good. Gonchar should be there for sure.

Maybe John Muckler should have taken Chara over Redden after all? Hmm.

What about Andrei Markov?

Why didn't you say so? Phaneuf is kind of a jerk, undeserving of this trophy. Mr. Gonchar, COME ON DOWN!

Maybe it has to do with how much confusion there is as to who should be nominated for the award, but Im betting Phaneuf is going to be the next Pronger. He'll be up for the award every year, less so because of his actual play, and more so because of his reputation.

As a Sens fan, I'm very glad that Muckler didn't choose Chara over Redden. In hindsight, the best answer might have been "none of the above".

Chara was directly responsible for at least 3 of those goals last night - letting Kovalev go untouched to set up the first goal, getting beat badly by Streit, and being in the penalty box while they set up a 3rd.

There isn't a defenceman in the league who disappears like Chara does when the chips are down. Too bad, because if that wasn't the case he'd be one of the best d-men in the league.

Chara was exposed as a pylon in the BUF-OTT series a couple of years ago. He was unspeakably bad last year for BOS. And this year he compiled his usual gaudy offensive numbers while paired with a guy who can actually skate - D Wideman.

Against the best skating team in the NHL, the Bs were 3-12 this year. And Chara plays 25 minutes a game.

How he could be the finalist for the Norris tells me what most hockey fans have suspected all along - it's a trophy about scoring from the blueline and little else.

Time for the Rod Langway Trophy, James.

I'm an Oilers fan with the requisite Pronger-hate, but I actually think his reputation short-changes him. I'd take him over any defenseman in the league except for Lidstrom.

Pronger's numbers, offensive and defensively, are almost always terrific. His suspension at the end of the season hurt him this year, but he was up there again.

MSM is dumb enough to vote a guy who wasn't even the #1 D on his OWN TEAM a Norris finalist?

Unbelievable.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I'd like to think a top 3 defenseman in the league, in an elimination game at home, wouldn't play against Joe Pavelski three times (10.8 to 3.9) as much as Joe Thornton at 5v5.

But he sure can deck those 3rd liners, so he must be a good defensive defenseman.

Anon, ken obviously didn't it mean it like that so taking it out of contacts for your sarcastic remark is rude. Gonchar is a talented defensemen and deserved a nomination. He was just saying that Gonchar is a nice guy and nice guys deserve it as much as the next guy. Dion doesn't derve it because he is still isn;t as disciplined as he should be. He is a great defensemen but will take stupid penalties at times. Come on, You have to admit Gonchar should deserve a nomination even though it is basically a clinch for Lidstrom.
