Orr on Lidstrom

I thought this was a great piece from The Detroit News, with Bobby Orr offering comments on what makes Nicklas Lidstrom so special.

Good stuff.

And I don't think there's any question who's winning the Norris Trophy this season.

Thank you Bobby! This is what I've been saying for some time now, including here

I think you could arguably rank Nick as 4th greatest of all time at this point in his career and defend that position fairly well based upon his numbers and what he has meant to the Wings over the past decade +

I think a lot of Flames fans feel otherwise.

I would hope that Slava Fetisov is somewhere near the top of that list of greatest defensemen of all time.

I think a lot of Flames fans are delusional.

Larry Robinson said (in his book, Robinson For The Defence, written in '88) that next to Bobby Orr, Fetisov was the best d'man he ever saw (up to that point in '88)... better than Salming, Potvin, Park, Lapointe, himself etc.

Fetisov is in pretty good company. By the time he came to the NHL he was past his prime (although played until about 40) & took him a cple of yrs to get used to the NHL/North America... by that time, he was about 35.

For career value, I put Fetisov near Orr. Orr obviously has a peak value that no one can match, but the injuries did him in.

Then again, I loved watching the early and mid 1980s Soviet national teams.

Re: Robinson's high evaluation of Fetisov (in '88)... I forgot to add that by that point Robinson would have seen Coffey, Bourque, Langway, Doug Wilson etc. also at their peak.
