Thoresen's unfortunate injury
The perils of Stanley Cup playoff hockey were on agonizing display Friday when Philadelphia Flyers left winger Patrick Thoresen slid in front of a slap shot.
Thoreson went down to block a slap shot by Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green with the Flyers clinging to a one-goal lead early in the third period. The puck struck Thoresen between the legs with such force that after the game he was taken to a Washington hospital Center.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Thoreson might need to have a testicle removed.
"Right now we're not sure how serious it is," Holmgren said after the Flyers blew a two-goal lead en route to a crushing 5-4 defeat in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. "But he may need surgery. There is a chance they may have to remove one."

That one's a little out of the ordinary...ouch.
Brave Glen Healey was ridiculing this guy lying on ice. Healey giving it to almost everybody through his new teeth that were cut a bit long.
Wow. I think it's safe to say every man that saw this, Flyer fan or not is hoping for the best for Thoresen.
Capitals Insider is reporting that the injury is not as severe as originally thought and that Thoresen might even be able to play tomorrow. Insanity. Hockey players man, just a different breed.
That hurts me to think about and I don't even have testicles. I can only imagine how much pain he must have been in.

Stay classy, Paul Holmgren. Am I wrong or does it seem obvious that Philly management played this for all it was worth given that the whistle didn't blow and the game-tying goal was scored on this play?
I don't know how anyone can conclude PHI played anything. If Thoreson was acting, he's Robert DeNiro. Holmgren seemed fairly restrained in the comments I saw. So the guy's not as badly injured, it turns out. That happens.

Not Thoreson. Holmgren's comments talked about the need for surgery, which apparently isn't the case. Still, if it makes you feel better, I think Glenn Healy's even classier for calling out Thoreson for not getting up on the play.
