More on Hockey-Reference sponsorships
James,We're starting something. It may be making money for others, but that's okay. Hopefully they use it for good instead of evil.
I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning the sponsorship system in your blog. We made a nice chunk of change last night due to your post.
Justin Kubatko
Vice President
Sports Reference LLC
A look around the blogosphere at sponsorship-related business:
- Wyshynski! (which his name has been legally changed to) bought up Chris Pronger and put out the call for suggestions for his tagline
- Stars fan Jen purchased Brenden Morrow and Darryl Reaugh
- These guys bought up Kelly Hrudey, Dustin Brown and Luc Robitaille
- On Frozen Blog, Japers' Rink and others have bought pretty much all of the 2007-08 Capitals
- Some Leafs fans paid half the hefty fee for Wayne Gretzky so that I would change his tagline. Now there's a good business model
- Kevin took his idol Barry Melrose
- Goose's Roost has The Goose
- Mile High Hockey took Burnaby Joe
- And I made sure The Pensblog was the first one to know about Gary Roberts's availability

I dunno. Looking at your photo, I don't think anyone should be referring to you as "venerable."
Check Jagr...
The gang of regulars at Bfloblog (many of whom have their own blogs) have been eating this up all day. This post has a running tally: http://bfloblog.wnymedia.net/?p=3212
So far various Sabre fans/bloggers have taken:
- Gilbert Perrault
- Pat LaFontaine
- Lindy Ruff
- Rob Ray
- Patrick Kaleta! (the exclamation point is an inside joke at Bfloblog)
- Henrik Tallinder
There's more I'm not catching I'm sure.
A member of the Oilogosphere had better buy up Stan Weir before it's too late!
Anyone? On behalf of Lowetide perhaps?
Some Flyers fans bought Ruutu's. I don't understand that, I wouldn't want to spend money and sponsor it if I didn't like the player.
Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman's pages were each bought up by appreciative sons and dedicated to their respective parents. Very heart-warming.
I like how this has become a hockey blogosphere-wide game of grafitti.
Canes Country picked up Eric Staal, Cam Ward, and Jimmy Rutherford.
Thanks for your heads up James.
Alexander Radulov is mine...
congrats hockey-reference, on a new way to print money!
I snagged Mark Messier!
I picked up The Kaleta! to advertise my shirts and because he's a hometown guy. Wanted Avery but was beaten to the punch. Contemplated a few others to make jokes but decided the price wasn't right.
Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman's pages were each bought up by appreciative sons and dedicated to their respective parents. Very heart-warming.
When baseball-reference.com started sponsorships, I gave my father the 1955 Dodgers for Christmas. You can do teams, too.
BfloBlog officially has 12 players under contract.
I bought Patrice Brisebois, and am using him to pimp out the humble message board I know and love.
I got Steve Downie, Lady Bing Underdog! I pointed it towards The Pensblog.
I sponsored the pages for Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, and Niklas Kronwall. Go Wings!
I bought Bret Hedican.
I've got:
Donald Brashear, Chris Clark, Chris Simon, Milan Lucic, Henrik Lundqvist, The Leafs, The 07/08 Caps team page, Tie Domi, Darcy Tucker, and Pat Kane.
Bought up Guy Carbonneau. I also noticed that the Pension Plan Puppets bought up Carey Price. Good one. lol
I have to agree with Jawsh ... what a way to make some cash, and quickly. How soon until the NHL itself finds a way to capitalize on something like this??
I took Joey Kocur, Brandon Dubinsky and Marek Malik.
I just bought Tuomo Ruutu's page. Something about him just makes sense if you look at him the right way.
Pension Plan Puppets got Daniel Alfredsson, too.
Check out the line on Jaroslov Halak's page. :)
Hi folks...
I'm keeping a list of any especially amusing entries. Feel free to drop by and let me know if you have any I've missed.
I picked up Alfie, Mats, Carey Price, the Habs, and the senators :)

This game is fun and definitely check out Jagr. That might be the best one.
I see Vanek is still available. I think someone from Oilerland should sponsor him... again.
Cox Bloc has snapped up Vesa Toskala,
Jiri NSFW Tlusty, and of course Jim Korn and Todd Gill.
This is too much fun.
I got Nick Lidstrom and Brian Engblom. This is funny.
Iginla is still available! Where are the Flames bloggers?
By the way, when I started blogging my goal was always to be refered to as "some Leaf fan" on Mirtle's blog.
I'd like some credit for Pensionplanpuppets' acquisitions.
The Leafs Bloggers are numerous and belligerent.
I bought Adam Foote, Ken Hitchcock, and Aaron Rome for myself, and Jared Boll for a friend.
I don't know why but for some reason I got Pominville.. I'm probably the only non-sport/hockey blogger to get any player thus far?
I own Derek Roy, and am thinking hard about Teppo Numminen (my son's favorite player).
I am very happy that 289 snagged The Kaleta! I have a feeling I'm not done...
I picked up the 1992-93 Maple Leafs in honour of the greatest game I ever had the pleasure to see my team play (Game 7 vs. the Kings). Too bad Gretzky had a better one that night; also too bad that Fraser blew the call in Game 6 that necessitated a Game 7.
