Outdoor hockey returns to Igloo

Starting with the first-round series against Ottawa, the Penguins set up a 12X16 LED screen in front of the Gate 3 entrance at Mellon Arena. As many as 3,500 fans gathered to watch broadcasts of the games ... Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final series against the Philadelphia Flyers will be played Friday at Mellon Arena at 7:30 p.m. Game 2 will be played Sunday at Mellon Arena 7:30 p.m.. Both games will be televised nationally by Versus.

“The outdoor screen has become a phenomenon in itself,” said Penguins president David Morehouse, “Our fans always have been very loyal to us and we’re happy to ‘give back’ to them in this way. We know that our fans who don’t have tickets are enjoying getting together to watch the home games on the big screen outside the arena, and we’re also getting large crowds for the broadcasts of road games.”

For safety reasons, the team asks fans not to bring grills or tents to the Gate 3 area. Also, alcohol is prohibited.

It's going to get pretty wild out in front of the rink there if the Penguins keep winning.

I'm fairly certain the Sabres didn't invent this either.

Why does it matter if it's new? It's a great way to watch the game and feel the atmosphere. Some people couldn't snatch the tickets that sold out in a few minutes upon being putting on sale. I love the idea. Besides how many things are not new? Thundersticks and towels were all stolen from someone else's tradition and playoff beards too.
