Sundin says

"I could have gone to Vancouver and where would I be now? Out of the playoffs. Or Ottawa, and where would I be now? Or Anaheim, and where would I be now?"
Steve Schrader from the Detroit Free Press had a good line on this one: "Mats apparently doesn't consider himself a difference maker."

1) So is Matts saying he would have had ZERO impact if he was dealt to any of those teams??
2) Sorry we lost respect for him in not wanting to take part in the post season. That explanation is weak!

Come on Faux. He didn't say he didn't want to be a part of the post-season he said he didn't want to be a mercenary. Big difference.

Schrader might have missed the point that Mats was trying to make. He wasn't saying that he wasn't a difference maker but that's not superman. No one could have saved Vancouver or Ottawa.

Out of the playoffs implies that you at least made the playoffs. I guess Sundin doesn't care about that.

No, Sundin being traded to a contender was to get a cup. So no, just making the playoffs didn't matter to him.

At least Ottawa made the playoffs. Sundin could have been the difference in avoiding a sweep, recouping another home game potentially and a few million.

Same for Vancouver. With Sundin do they not squeak out ONE of their last 8 that they lost? That puts them in the playoffs and generates a few million of revenue.

OK, Mats, I'll answer the question:

You'd be preparing for another season in Toronto, for a team in a much better position than it is now thanks to youngp layers they got for you.

Put another way: You lost the change to have a Chris Higgins type player on your wing next year, all for the chance to get an extra few weeks off.

Sundin was selfish and doesn't seem to have the same hunger for winning that most players have.

At the same time, he earned the right to do whatever he wants.

Selfish? You've got to be kidding me. I'm not a Leafs guy in the least, and when I look at Mats Sundin, I see a guy who bleeds Leaf blue. He has been the heart and soul of your team for 13 years, and you rip him because he didn't want to leave to go be a mercenary? The fact that he didn't want to be a mercenary, and wanted to stay in Toronto, would make me like him MORE if I was a Leafs fan. Don't you want guys in town who WANT to play for your team?

Obviously you can see my bias -- I hate those rental player deals. I think they cheapen the game. To me, Ray Bourque was a Boston Bruin, and I just didn't understand the fuss when he won a Cup with a loaded team in Colorado. I would have had more respect for Bourque had he stayed put, and said that he wanted to stay a Bruin for life.

Sorry folks, I'm with Prouse on this one... Sure, everyone heard what Sundin said during trade deadline time but did anyone really LISTEN to what he was saying? His tone and body language all said to me that even if it were the Wings who were calling for him, he still wouldn't have went. Sure, call me crazy and full of sh*t, I don't care but that's the vibe he gave off and that's how I read it. And for a guy who gave every ounce of blood, sweat and tears plus the bullsh*t of trying to replace icons like Clark and Gilmour in Leaf Nation eyes, some of you out there still have the temerity to rag on him when it's clear he wants to play for Leafs and no one else? Jeezus... Give your collective heads a shake. If anyone's being selfish, in this case specifically, it's retards like you...

The media spin on Sundin's decision to stay with the Leafs astounds me. How they have made people see what he did as selfish is amazing. Staying with a terrible team in the twilight of your career out of loyalty is not selfish.

Heartless fans who actively want to see their franchise player in another team's uniform don't deserve a Captain like Mats. Its going to take more than whatever the Leafs would have got for Sundin to turn this team around so stop blaming him. Maybe if they traded him in 07 when the market was better I'd think otherwise but I don't see teams building around the Espositos and Berniers that were available this year.

Your boss walks into your office in mid-Februrary and ask you to transfer to Lower Bumphook, Man., until the end of March.

After that, you don't have a job so you might have to relocate to yet another city.

Your wife is at home taking care of three schoolkids. She has friends in your current city.

She tells you that if you even consider up and moving to Lower Bumphook, much less think about moving to Upper Cornholio, SK., in the fall, we are getting a divorce, mister.

Knowing ahead of time that stability for your family is important, you had HR write into your contract that you can't be transferred without your permission.

But after the transfer request, all your co-workers, suppliers and clients keep asking you, for months and months and months, why you didn't accept the move to Lower Bumphook. "They get to play in the company softball tournament every April!!"

Finally, one day, when you've grown completely sick of the question, you sarcastically reply:
"Do you really suppose that if I'd transferred to Lower Bumphook in February that their branch wouldn't have lost $3 million this quarter? How many industrial widgets do you people really think I sell in a month, anyway?"

When word gets out it starts to sound like what you're saying is, "I'm a crappy salesman. Why would Lower Bumphook want me anyway?"

Before long, suppliers and clients start calling you a loser.

One day, the HR Dept sends the boss a memo: "Having trouble filling the open sales position. Nobody wants to come work in a fishbowl. Mr. Kariya turned us town flat. Mr. Roberts and Mr. Peca can't wait to leave. Mr. Briere laughed at us. Mr. Drury said, 'it'll be a cold day in Halifax.'"

This is why it's 41 years and counting...

Anonymous 6:12, you make too much sense. I'm a die hard Leaf fan and can't stand the people who say that Sundin is selfish, but judging from the people around me, it seems to be more of an idea that the media is suggesting, not true fans.

I'm with Prouse, and everyone below him. I've never been as impressed with Mats Sundin as a lot of people are. Back when Sweden lost to Belarus in 2002, I thought that was par for the course for a Sundin captained team.

Unlike some people, he won me over at the trade deadline this year. If there are really morons in Toronto who can't appreciate that a player wants to be there, they really need to do some soul searching as to why they live there.

I was also turned off by the whole Ray Bourque spectacle. It highlights all of the ways in which defining an individual's career by winning a team championship is stupid.

Gee-zus. Even if he had gone to Ottawa who knows? Sure they were swept but we all know that it only takes one goal, one play to change a game. It's not far from going 0-4to 2-2.

I agree with Joe.
No "fans" were asking for Mats to wave his no trade clause. Then, with the Leafs all but out and very little news here, the Media decides to feed off this premise.
Why should Sundin wave his trade clause if he worked hard to earn it. Who here wants to live and work in Detroit for ex for 3 months if we dont want to, if our heart is not in it?
People need to give their head a shake and dont let the Media control your thinking
