2007-08 Lady Byng voting
The Byng votes are all over the place, with 96 players receiving one vote or more. Which means almost 15 per cent of the NHL is gentlemanly and sportsmanlike, at least in the views of some of the PHWA:
It's good to see Nick Lidstrom narrowly missed out on a nomination, as defencemen really should be considered for this thing more often. Ovechkin at ninth is a nice thought; he plays and hits hard, but is generally clean and would be an inspired choice.
You get the feeling this is the "vote for the hometown good guy award" more than anything. The players don't take it seriously and I'm not so sure the voters do either. (Although there aren't any enforcers on the list, as we've seen in the past.)
What the giant list speaks to, more than anything, is how hard it is to pin down just who should win this silly thing. It's probably time to redefine what it's given out for and honour some of the league's elder statesmen.
