Canucks take Wellwood
The Vancouver Canucks added some depth down the middle for next season, claiming soon-to-be restricted free agent centre Kyle Wellwood off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.Wellwood made just $950,000 last year and a qualifying offer would come cheap. He had a tough season last year here in Toronto, but has some potential, and Vancouver's desperate for forward depth — especially if they lose Markus Naslund and Brendan Morrison to free agency.
The Canucks can retain his rights by giving him a qualifying offer and he would not become an unrestricted free agent.
It's no surprised Wellwood was picked up given he could be had for nothing. It'll be incredibly interesting to see just who fills out the forward lines for the Maple Leafs this season.

I really wouldn't mind if the Leafs signed Morrison this year. I haven't got a clue of who else might fit, but at least he'd provide a veteran center with some scoring ability and good defense and character. I'd rather see the Leafs add some good character guys than go for spectacular free agents like Hossa, which I don't think makes any sense when rebuilding.
That's a nice gamble by Gillis. The odds are really good that Wellwood can bounce back (at least part way) to his 2006-07 form, where he killed soft opp.
Just what the Canucks needed: another guy whose careeer high is 12G.
I thought Doby Gillis was ushering in a new era in Vancouver?
They can effing have him.
Wait wait wait.
I thought Gillis blasted Nonis for his passive and gun-shy approach to trading? But then he plays it ultra-safe at the draft and loses out on Cammeleri.
And then he goes and signs Marc Chouinard? Er, I mean Byron Ritchie? Sorry, confused, KYLE WELLWOOD?
How is this any different? 38 years without a cup and counting....
James, i'm pretty sure Toronto is going for Tavares. This is going to take "tanking it" to a new level.
A bargain-basement roll of the dice that will end up one of two ways:
He could pay off nicely for the Canucks, a la Anson Carter.
Or he could have little to zero impact at all, a la Marc Chouinard, Byron Ritchie, Brad Isbister or Jan Bulis.
Let's hope he can stay healthy!
Let's see if he can pass a physical again. He looks more like me than a professional athlete.
