Leafs put off GM search until 2009
Cliff Fletcher will remain the Toronto Maple Leafs' interim general manager for the entire 2008-09 NHL season, according to a member of the search committee for the new GM.This isn't going to calm the Brian Burke speculation any.
The Leafs do not expect to hire a new GM until the summer of 2009 because that is when the contracts of several of the top NHL general managers expire.

Hmmm but this at least makes everything look good to the NHL when Burke comes over. No tampering if the Leafs have a GM in place!
At what point do the Ducks give up? It has become painfully obvious that Burke is going to Toronto as soon as he can, as evidenced by the fact that a contract extension has been sitting on his desk for months, unsigned. Eventually, you would think that the Samuelis will tire of having a GM who has clearly sent his bags on ahead. Eventually, I expect that they will fire him, but make him sit at home until July 1, 2009. Alterately, they could try to sell Burke to the Leafs right now for cash and/or draft picks, although the NHL does frown on those kinds of deals.
"And now for the Toronto Maple Leafs first pick in the draft... we go to Ryan Rishaug at the Mighty Ducks table..."
