Burke with a muzzle
A somewhat muted Brian Burke responded today to Oilers GM Kevin Lowe in the O.C. Register:
Lowe on Friday: “Corey Perry is a hell of a player. What I really want to say about his (Burke’s) bickering about parity and the salary cap is if you’re unhappy about them, then trade him (Perry) our way. We’ll be glad to have him.”Round and round we go.
Burke on Thursday: “It is our understanding that NHL member clubs are not entitled to express interest in the services of a player belonging to another NHL organization. Our understanding is that such an expression of interest constitutes tampering. We have asked the league to investigate whether a tampering episode has taken place. We’ve asked them to make a full investigation into that. We will have no further comment on this, and whatever the league’s decision is, we will abide by that.”
“The NHL has stepped in and stopped the fight, and we respect that,” Burke said. “We believe the NHL has a perfect right to do that, and we intend to abide by the league’s directive, which is to stop the criticism. There is no question in our minds, or no defiance. I consider the public debate to be at an end, because that is what the commissioner has ordered. I don’t view this as continuing the debate. This is responding to specific jabs that our team needed to address.”I'm glad that was cleared up.

It's shamefully hilarious.
What do you want now, a picture of Burkie crashing through a league-sponsored gag order? :)
"If you don't want him, we'll take him" is tampering?
Really, Burke? I mean, are you just making shit up now, or what?
I used to think Burke's XXXL-sized head was a birth defect, but now I realize it actually is full of hot air.
Someone should tell Burke that it is probably safe to assume that every team in the NHL would have an interest in Perry.
Earl if you could pull that off it might have as much potential as your enhancements to the Chops logo
So, was it tampering when Burke expressed interest in the services of Chris Pronger? According to his standard, that would seem to be the case. What a joke.
So..Let's see the self-proclaimed genius had the second overall pick in 2005 and drafted a bust.
Nothing like inheriting a championship team and then driving it into the ground.
Burke wanted to have the last word but totally blew it. Yes, it was clever to bring up playoff rounds and great fans etc. but then he went on with these NHL investigations.
Bad mistake!
I hope Kevin Lowe keeps his mouth shut. He would take the championship belt with his one and only tirade. It would be like one punch fight.
Burkie took several shots and got floored with one good shot. He woke up in hospital and days later tries to explain that his opposition used gloves that were too heavy and he probably used steroids, too.
(And I like Burke)
Burke looks like a total ass here. His whole tampering thing is so childish. "Oh yeah? Oh YEAH?! Well, you smell bad!"
I have lost a lot of respect for this guy.
U Know I emailed James about Burke awhile back. Got the "he took them to the cup line under the cap line". I was asking if he wanted to take a close look at his record and draft picks etc. I just don't get the props this pompous wind bag gets. I am not happy for the Ducks fans as their owner is in for it with the SEC, but what the heck it sounds like if you are from Cali you can do anything according to Gary. So Burkie is you can read this shut your hole win another five cups then call Kevin as you sir will not be going to the HHOF anytime soon. Burke wants to censor the bloggers I guess we fans don't have to buy the party line. Earl for GM!!!!!
I think Burke did a beautiful job in transforming that Ducks team into a Cup winner, but it's clear that his long-term vision was pretty faulty. Giving in to his personal biases, especially with players like Bertuzzi, may be Burke's fatal flaw.
I also offered compliments for him long before this silliness took off. His stock is declining by the week, as far as I'm concerned.

You couldn't do it with ice, though - it would have to be like those football players running onto the field through a team banner.
Burke just has to get in the last word.
(It might be too early to decide that Ryan is a bust, though - and I do think that was out of bounds for Lowe to bring up the kid, since he had nothing to do with the original dispute between the two.)
Instead of doing a verbal rant against Lowe, Burke is just trying to give him the ol' shiv to the kidneys by throwing investigations at him. Why doesn't Burke just pick up his ball, say "I don't want to be your friend anymore" and go home so his little tirade can end?
I agree that Lowe shouldn't have made some of the comments he made (although most were pretty dead-on), but I wouldn't hold it against Lowe to file a full investigation against Burke for disobeying Bettman's request of stopping the feud. Just thinking about that happening is making me giggle a little.
I wonder if Burke has a picture of Donald Trump on his office wall...
If there was any lingering iota of criticism for some of the things Lowe said, Burke just took away the attention with this ill-advised stunt. As someone posted in response to Lowe's comments..."It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and prove it". It sure applies here. Just had to have the last word - well it is backfiring.
is the league going to investigate itself after the Oilers requested months ago that they tell Burke to shut up but nothing was done about it?
of course not. maybe the Oilers should pull up their data files on that one so they can just shove it both of their faces that they were trying to take the high road the entire time but Pussy Bettman didnt have the balls to fulfill the request cause he's a gutless lady boy when it comes to that fat faced Burke who should have been the logo for the Iowa Chops. a nice fat, grunting pig.
A token fine from the league for the pompous windbag would be appropriate for his need to have the last word.
STFU already.
Hey Peddie, might be time to request to get him out of his contract again. The answer may have changed.
What the rest of the world does not need is all the microphones in Toronto in front of this guy 24/7.
