Lightning front office adds Vernon

The Tampa Bay Lightning have hired former NHL goaltender Mike Vernon as special assistant to the vice president of hockey operations today, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced. Vernon’s duties will be to assist in hockey-related matters and to provide guidance to the team’s goaltenders.

“The Tampa Bay Lightning are thrilled to add a former Stanley Cup Champion to our staff,” vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “Mike’s past experience and knowledge will be a true benefit to the organization and it will be critical to us as we continue to make changes within the team to improve it.”

It's a good thing Barrie's a real estate developer because the Lightning are going to need a lot more space to house all of the new front office additions.

It'd be interesting to see what all of these new staffers will cost.

Isn't Mike Vernon one of Len Barrie's investment buddies in the Bear Mountain resort?

"I think I'll make myself... vice president. No, wait! Junior vice president!"

Actually Tampa might have cheap front office since all of them are loaded.

Lawton made some money playing, some money when he sold his shares in hockey agency and 100M when he married.

Barrie and Koules are probably ok moneywise. And Vernon is loaded because he's made more money in his many investments than playing.

Maybe they just collect 30.000 each and enjoy Tampa Bay during winters?

Mike Vernon is also Len Barrie's brother-in-law.

Another significant investor in Barrie's Bear Mountain Resort is Garry Roberts - now on Tampa's roster.

According to the Globe and Mail, here is a list of current and former NHLers who invested in Barrie's resort. It will be interesting to watch how many become associated with Tampa in the future:

Trevor Kidd
Sean Burke
Scott Mellanby
Ryan Smyth
Rob Niedermeyer
Matt Pettinger
Joe Nieuwendyk
Ray Whitney
Mike Sillinger
Rob Blake
Greg Adams

Was "assistant to the traveling secretary" already taken?

I'm not sure that that's true. Anyone have a link?
