Lightning name new Norfolk GM

The Tampa Bay Lightning have named Mike Butters general manager, Darren Rumble head coach and Alan May assistant coach of the Norfolk Admirals, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced today.

“Mike Butters is a lifetime hockey man with extended experience as a player, manager and owner,” Lightning vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “He is a meticulous evaluator of talent and his knowledge of the game will prove to be a valuable asset for the Admirals as we try to return them to the top of the standings.”

Butters's experience?

He "has served as president, co-owner and associate coach of the Helena Bighorns junior A team for the past eight years."

Helena plays in the Northern Pacific Hockey League, and far from the NHL — or even AHL — it's a low level junior league in the Western U.S. It's designated Junior A Tier III.

Oh, and Koules owns the Bighorns. Quite the promotion.

It's a damn shame what happened to Norfolk... went from a winning team to a cellar dweller, at the drop of a hat.

Tampa's got a seriously light prospect crop, I'm not sure if Norfolk was that aware of it when they signed the deal.

I'm anxiously awaiting the announcement that Towelie has been named the Lightning's new equipment manager.

I would love to see Cartman as the coach, just for the post-game interviews.

Stan's the one with the coaching experience.

I have more experience in hockey than Butters. But Anonymous isn't very mediasexy last name so once again my services were overlooked.

Now my only hope is Islanders.
