Penguins add Cooke

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Matt Cooke to a two-year contract, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

"Matt is a versatile forward that will bring grit, energy and experience to our line-up," Shero said. "He is the type of player that adds depth upfront and is capable of providing offense for our hockey club.”

Consider this a Ruutu replacement.

UPDATE I'll be on KDKA radio in Pittsburgh between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday on the Black and Gold Sunday show.

Ruutu and Cooke started together in Syracuse and moved on to Vancouver. Now this?

Anyway, I think Ruutu is more valuable eventhough Cooke is faster. Somehow Ruutu has more stature.

Ruutu is a great instigator because he fights but only when HE wants to. He has KO's Rob Blake and beat Darcy Turcker so he can handle himself.

The best signing in Ottawa. Well, that's not too hard to do, since there's been boatload of crappy trades and signings done in Ottawa.

Preissing, Corvo, Gerber, Emery, Stillman, Commodore, Lapointe... This is a accident that you have to watch.

Ruutu is a Finn. What's wrong with them? 20% of the players who filed for arbitration are Finns but only 2% of NHL players are Finns.

Figure that one out?

Small sample size.

talent wise, it is a downgrade. Even back in 05-06, their last year together with the Canucks, Ruutu had established himself above Cooke in the depth chart.

That being said, I know that Cooke is one of the most despised players around the league. If nothing else, he'll be on par with Ruutu for distracting attention away from Pittsburgh's stars.

Tim: Cooke's career numbers (83 goals and 210 points in 583 games) are better than Ruutu's (36 goals and 83 points in 410 games). Obviously this isn't Gretzky v. Lemieux or anything, but Cooke's produced more points.

I think this is a good signing for the Pens, Cooke will bring the grit they need. The Pens offered Ruutu a two year deal and he declined for the Ottawa deal, so for them to turn around and get a player the caliber of Cooke for the right price and the right number of years is a great thing.

I have to say I'm impressed with Shero and the Pens. He lost Hossa and Malone and got Satan and Fedetenko. He lost Ruutu and got Cooke. He's locked up Malkin, Fluery, and Orpik to join Crosby and Whitney - all great young players at bargain prices. Compare that to any other team. cough *vancouver* cough.
Is it only that these players are eager to join Crosby or is Shero simply smarter and working harder than other GM's?

I'd say that Shero is working harder than other GMs that were interested in Satan, Fedotenko and Cooke, but, for the second time in this thread, the answer is "Small sample size"...

Shero is working hard, for sure, but having Crosby and Malkin certainly helps to lure wingers who want to rejuvenate their careers.

if they expect him to fight then they got the wrong guy. Cooke hasn't fought anyone since he broke his jaw

The two key pieces, Malkin and Crosby, were no-brainer draft picks, the latter a result of a lottery where 30 teams had an equal chance. And Vancouver? They thought they were lucky to be drafting at 10th overall and picked Luc Bourdon.
