Penguins keep Orpik

Finally some good news in Pittsburgh, where the roster had started to look a little thin given yesterday's clearing house.

Brooks Orpik was one of the most heavily sought-after free agent defenders on the market, and he re-signs with the Penguins on a six-year deal for $3.75-million a season.

"Brooks has become a mainstay of our blueline and played an important role in our run to the Stanley Cup Final," GM Ray Shero said. "He provides the kind of physical presence you need on a Cup contender, and his work ethic, preparation, and determination are second to none."

For awhile there, I thought Shero forgot he was an NHL GM and he's allowed to sign players as well.

This is one of the best deals signed so far. Hope Montreal can ink Komisarek to a similar long term extension.

Shero shouldn't have played the same game as his crazy contemporaries, although he could've matched the Ruutu offer if he had wanted. Now it's time to look at the Demitras, Huselius', and Naslunds to see if any want to take a little less to play with an elite centre on a Cup contender. I still think Shanahan would be worth a call here as well, given the veteran leadership lost in Roberts and the skilled size lost with Malone.

I hope Darcy Regier has something to say on Orpik because there's no reason why the Sabres couldn't offer a deal like that. This is not a nutty contract. UGH.

I quess Orpik didn't like Toronto or Columbus. This deal is great for Pens and Shero. Very reasonable at 3.75M average.

At the same time you really can't pay more than that to a defensive defenceman when you have Crosby and Malkin and soon Fleury making money they're making.

There's no way the Orpik gave any other team that number. He could've signed for 4 to 5m/per if he wanted to sign with another team.
