The rise of the Blackhawks
There's a great story today in the Chicago Sun-Times on Rocky Wirtz, John McDonough and how the Blackhawks are relevant again in the city:
On the night the Hawks honored former great Tony Esposito, Wirtz saw security interfering with a fan's attempt to throw a jersey into Esposito's lower-level box. He walked over to the fan and said, "What can I do for you?" The fan, who was in his 30s, said he was a lifelong fan of Esposito and wanted to get the jersey signed. Wirtz walked him past security into Esposito's box.An old topic, but a good one. You can see in the hockey blogosphere more and more Chicago influence lately, which is a great thing.
"He couldn't believe it," Wirtz said. "It meant something to him. And that's how you do it. Fan by fan, you build an organization. It's just like building a brand. There's no Madison Avenue sales pitch that can build that kind of commitment."
I'm already looking forward to the Winter Classic II.
UPDATE Chicago named Jonathan Toews captain on Friday night in a move that was widely expected. Toews is the third-youngest captain in NHL history, behind Sidney Crosby and Vincent Lecavalier.

Don't forget SBN's Second City Hockey.
Nice to see the Hawks coming back to life.
And don't forget that outdoor game in Edmonton, either.
I guess this means we can't make any more cracks about the NHL expanding to Chicago now that they actually look like a real team. LA's turn?
Technically, it's Winter Classic III
"Technically," it's Winter Classic II, but the third outdoor game, since the first was the Heritage Classic, and not really targeted as an annual event.
For Blackhawks blogs, there's hockeenight , too.
