Sharks re-sign Clowe

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the team has signed left wing Ryane Clowe to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Clowe, 25, was limited to 15 games due to a knee injury he suffered in Columbus on Oct. 29. He returned to the line-up with only four games remaining in the regular season and finished with eight points (three goals, five assists).

In the 2008 playoffs, Clowe finished tied for the teams goal scoring lead (five) and his nine points was ranked second on the Sharks.

Clowe, a big winger with some nice potential, was one of those few unsigned restricted free agents still hanging around. San Jose could have really used him last season.

The contract is for $1.6-million for 2008-09.

About damn time.

However, the term concerns me. Rumor had it just before July 1st (and some details released after then) that Clowe and Doug Wilson had a handshake agreement on contract terms, and that the only thing left to decide on was the number of years. Which, from a Sharks source speaking to beat writer David Pollack, the team had pretty much left up to Clowe.

He said in a follow-up he didn't want to be anywhere but San Jose...

...but then it took over a month longer for the deal to actually be signed, and then only for one year?

Methinks his agent's advised him he could be in for a big payday when he hits the UFA market next season.
