Richards named Flyers captain

Almost from the day he was drafted, Flyers center Mike Richards was referred to by many as the future captain of the club.

On Wednesday, that speculation became a reality, as the 23-year-old fourth year center was named as the 17th captain in franchise history, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.
The league is certainly trending toward younger and younger captains these days, for whatever reason, but Richards is a good choice regardless of age.

This post a few weeks back looked at all of the vacant captaincies around the league.

“It is something John [Stevens] and I had talked about over the course of the summer time,” said Holmgren. “John has spent a great deal of time with Mike just to make sure that he is ready for this. I spent some time with Mike since he has been back in town, and we are positive it’s the right time to do this with Mike. We look forward to him being the leader of the Flyers for many years to come.”

This isn't always a good idea. He could florish like Sidney Crosby, but odds are he will have an off-year especially with the new Holmgren-inflated contract. What is going on in Flyerland?

I certainly see the trend to younger captains; contributing to this, however, is the emergence of many star young players in the seasons since the lockout. There's been a surprising passing of torches around the league, but unless it continues the age of captains will gradually creep back up.

Richards could be an NHL captain into his 30s.

Richards has pretty much been a leader wherever he has played. I'd like to point out to dave that Richards was captain of Team Canada of the 2005 World Juniors...you know, the one that won gold and had Crosby on it. The kid's a leader. This was not about having one good season and naming him captain.

Dave, i would agree with you if it was anyone but Richards. There was a reason he was named captain of a canadian team that had the likes of Crosby on it, and he has been a leader in that dressing room since last year, this is the perfect time to give it to him, and he has Gagne, Briere, and Timonen there for support with A's. Great choice.
