You know it's preseason when ...

There were some nice obscure scoring lines among tonight's eight preseason games:

14:23, Dan Gendur 1 (Jason Jaffray, Jason Krog)
5:17, Petr Nedved 1 (Aaron Voros, Pierre Parenteau)
18:48, Steve Downie 1 (Sean Curry, Jon Kalinski)
3:14, Phillip Gogulla 1 (pp) (Clarke MacArthur, Marek Zagrapan)
2:56, Michel Ouellet 1 (Dana Tyrell, Ty Wishart)
18:43, Oscar Moller 1 (pp) (David Meckler, Peter Harrold)
2:08, Brian Boyle 1 (pp) (Oscar Moller, Vjateslav Voinov)
5:42, Garth Murray 1 (Derek Nesbitt, Chad Kolarik)

Points to you if you can name all of the teams involved (highlight below for the answers): Vancouver, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles (x2), Phoenix

There were also all sorts of fresh faces in goal, with 28 different netminders playing in the eight games. A few names I wasn't all that familiar with: Matt Zaba (Rangers), Jonas Enroth (Sabres), John Curry (Penguins), Jeff Zatkoff (Kings) and Josh Tordjman (Coyotes).

Zaba's definitely from as far off the board as possible: He played only 28 games in the ECHL last season for two different teams, and was an eighth round pick by the Kings in 2003. Zatkoff, meanwhile, posted excellent numbers in the NCAA with Miami U (Ohio) and is entering his first pro season, while Enroth was the Swedish league's netminder of the year last season.

All five are destined for the AHL, but you never know when you'll see them up given their positions. Dan Ellis, for example, was an ECHL starter in 2003-04 and is now in camp as the Predators' main man for the first time at age 28.

You see, I saw some of the score lines on TSN and was disappointed by the lack of obscure names, but that was just the games involving the Canadian clubs. All of Boston's 8 goals were scored by NHLers, for example. I did appreciate that Gendur from Jaffray and Krog one, though.

Gotta say, I was able to name each team. However, quite a few of the actual goal-scorers I did not recognize (Gendur, and of course, James, Drewiske). I got most of the teams via the assist makers (Kolarik with Phoenix and Jaffray with Vancouver).

Very interesting blog.

I can't believe you mentioned Zaba. Wow. I don't know if Matt would be happy he was mentioned by a journalist of your calibre, or choked that he was considered "far of the board".

John Curry came out of Boston University.

He was part of the AHL's All Rookie Team this year.
