Flyers lose another defenceman

Defencemen Randy Jones is likely going to miss up to two months with hip surgery, according to multiple sources in Philadelphia today.

I don't think the Flyers can make the playoffs using the group of defencemen they're going to have for the first few months of the season, which potentially changes the dynamics in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. They also have very few options in terms of adding personnel given how tight they are against the cap.

Plus, the reason they didn't sign Bryan Berard was that they have 49 players already under contract. The league maximum is 50. They need to try and move some contracts before they can consider taking any new ones on.

Their only option is to deal some of their forward depth for blueliners.

Good point. Maybe someone gets moved out and we do see Giroux in the NHL this season.

Once again, everyone is underestimating the mystique and prowess of Ossi Vaananen, Lord of the Vowels.

I hope he's paired with Lasse Kukkonen.

Problem is, James, Giroux had a not so great camp this year. He just flat out did not make the cut.

I can't see them bringing him up this year. He's just not ready.

That's true, but we'll see how he fares in the minors early on. I don't think it's impossible that he lights it up with the Phantoms and gets recalled to fill a hole.

i agree with you James. I would imagine that it can be intimidating trying to make an NHL team so young, it could just be a pressure factor. He could build some character with the Phantoms, then make his was to the Flyers if need be.

It's certainly scary to think about what this D corps could be like, but I think depending on how Eminger develops and this mystery of the vowel-master vaananen, they could prove serviceable until Jones and Parent return.

Or maybe they'll have to win every game 6-5, Tampa-style.

Well, Flyers lost to Phantoms in Spectrum farewell game so problems are obvious.

Where's Jussi Timonen when you need him?

I was going to suggest Sami Kapanen but I see he's gone back to Europe.

Maybe the Flyers have an alternate purpose in bringing Sarah Palin in tom'w night--they're hoping to sign the father of her 17-year old daughter's kid to play some D for them. He's moronic enough to play for them, being fond of gunplay and unprotected sex as he is....

So, can we say that the Flyers are having a vowel movement?

Wow...it's funny to think that Jussi Timonen, who was last seen as a depth defender for the Stars AHL team, could've been top-six material with the Flyers right now. That's not saying anything against the Flyers skill level, just their amount of depth.
