Remembrance Day

I don't know what to think about the latest Poppy-gate hubbub that Cosh has his teeth into, but I'll proudly display the Royal Canadian Legion's poppy to support our war veterans for Nov. 11.

I suggest all of my readers with their own blogs do the same. But no need to save the image — you can simply link directly to the convenient poppy image that the Legion has up for the taking on their homepage: http://www.legion.ca/asp/gfx/pix/im_rempoppy.gif

Thanks Canadian Legion!

The issue is this -- someone at the Legion decided to get their shorts in a knot over the fact that the Bourque news website had an image of a poppy on it, as it does every year about this time. Some genius decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to flex the Legion's muscles over "ownership" of the poppy symbol, something about which most Canadians would have been unaware. Given that Bourque wasn't making a dime on this, but rather just publicizing Remembrance Day, the whole thing has made the Legion look petty, and made a lot of people question why they were ever granted any kind of ownership of the symbol to begin with. The smartest thing the Legion could do is drop back and punt at this stage, and forget they ever said anything...

So because you feel the Legion was over the top in defending their trademark you are encouraging people to steal their bandwidth?

It's the law of unintended consequences -- if the Legion thinks it is so awful for a site to have an image of the poppy on it, then they can pay for the bandwidth to allow others to link to "their" symbol. The symbol, of course, belongs to all Canadians, and I'm still baffled as to why the Legion thought this was worth such a big headache.
