The Wellwoods' battle

If Rick Wellwood had battled cancer or muscular dystrophy, the story of Kyle's growth and maturation as both an NHL player and a young man would have been celebrated against such a backdrop. That Rick Wellwood has suffered from a bipolar condition for years means the path followed by the entire family has been no less rocky or emotional, no less pivotal to Kyle's development, but has also been shrouded in whisper and rumor. At least, from the outside.
I know I've likely said it before, but Scott Burnside (formerly of the National Post) is producing some of the best hockey writing around from his post down in Atlanta. If you haven't been stopping by his corner of ESPN's site, I highly recommend you do.

That's a nice piece - it's quite true that the stigma of mental health really only serves to make the problem worse. If people spoke more openly about how it affects them (and their families) it would greatly improve understanding, and likely lead more people to reach out and get the help they need.
