Two Habs arrested in Tampa

Canadiens defenceman Ryan O'Byrne and forward Tom Kostopoulos spent last night in a holding cell in the Tampa jail after they were arrested outside a South Tampa night club early this morning.

O'Byrne was charged with grand theft, while Kostopoulos was charged with resisting an officer without violence.
This apparently happened in the aftermath of the team rookie party.

Either Mr. O'Byrne is a clypto, a victim/participant in some prank/hazing, or he's really awkward with the ladies.

Kostopolous apparently was arrested for not listening to the police when they told him to back off.

Sharing 1/3 of the team dinner's cost, posting $2000.00 for bail, any further legal bills and fines, plus likely fines/suspensions from the NHL and the Canadiens... last night was quite the costly venture for Mr. O'Byrne. Hope he's saved some of that NHL money he's been making for the past 2 1/2 months.

The reports haven't come out yet, but I'd bet this was part of the freshman hazing they were doing.

Well, 3 Canadiens players aren't old enough to be at that club, 2 of whom would be the rookies they're trying to haze (Sergei Kostitsyn and Price are 20; Latendresse is 20 as well), so if they were at that club and allowed in then the club has some answers to give as well.

Also that night at the same club, former Philadelia 76er Alvin Jones was arrested and charged with battery, disorderly conduct or obstructing or opposing an officer without violence.

Nick: we follow a bush league, man; this shouldn't surprise you.

Sounds like a great party.

p.s I heard the purse actually belonged to O'Byrne and that Kostopoulos got mad at the cops because they didn't treat O'Byrne like a lady!

Also of note is that Sunday night was the club's final night in business.

They are closing and tearing the thing down to build more condos.

It's been kind of talked about for a while the kind of send off weekend they were going to have for the place.

Who says hockey players can't even get arrested in the US?

Bettman's plan seems to be working.

The complete account states that O'Byrne thought it was his girlfriend's purse. Beleive what you will and Kostopolous didn't back off, but did not come into contatct with any of the officers.

I find it hard to believe that they will be able to make a theft charge stick on O'Byrne. A pro athlete making a half million dollars a year, stealing purses? Come on. This was clearly a drunk, stupid prank. These charges will end up being dropped, and O'Byrne will end up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor on disorderly conduct or something similar. He has already suffered enough, what with the embarrassment of looking like a complete fool on the front page of the Journal de Montreal.
